CHAPTER THIRTEEN

* * *

Remon pushed his way past the crowd. He had much to do and not much time to do it. Gobin shuffled after him.

“Bryan, can you accompany Été to her home so that she can bring her things?” Myles said. “She will stay here tonight. I will pay for the room.”

Été protested, but Myles shook his head until she stopped.

“You can accompany me to my home, then, Myles,” she said.

“I need to speak with Guillaume a little more about the plan,” he brushed her cheek with his hand. “I will be done when you return, and we can have some wine by the fire.”

She left slowly, shooting glances back at Myles.

Guillaume watched her go. “I hope you understand that if you hurt that girl I—”

“Yes, I know Guillaume,” Myles pointed to the fireplace. “The juggling clubs.”

They sat quietly in the tavern, listening to the bustle outside. Myles thought of something. “What does Été mean?”

“Summer, Myles. Été means summer.”

Myles laughed. “Of course it does.”

Guillaume smiled. “She is special to me. I would protect her to my dying breath.”

Myles nodded and traced loops on the table with his fingertip. “Like you did with Joan?”

The smile on Guillaume’s face withered. “Yes. Like Jehanne.”

“I heard Été call you Guillaume de Flavy. Is that really your name?”

“Été should not speak so much.”

Myles stared at the purple stain on the wall. Marielle had shrieked in French and pointed to the broken glass until Myles rolled five sous at her.

“I heard a story about a man named Guillaume de Flavy. A man who was at Compiègne.”

Guillaume leaned forward, his lips curled into a snarl. “You keep that story to yourself, Myles Stapleton. You bury that story deeply inside you, and you never let it see sunshine. Or you and I will be enemies. Enemies. Eternal and unrepairable enemies.”

“I have heard of English men-at-arms and knights murdered by citizens of French towns they were trying to protect,” said Myles. “My brother tells me that the French lie. That they will stab us at the first chance they get. I don’t believe him.”

“If I stab you, Myles, you will be looking on with a sword in your hand.”

“I want to know if the story is true,” said Myles.

“You want to know if it is true.”

“I want to know.”

“What difference does it make? I did what I thought was right. And it has burned my soul every day since. I see her face at night. I see it before me, and I reach for it, but I can never get to her. She is always too far. And the faster I run, the farther away she goes. You want to know if it’s true? Yes. It is true. I ordered the gates to be shut. I left her and her men outside, banging at the doors with a thousand English soldiers at her back. Does that make me untrustworthy? Maybe. But I will never stab you in the back.”

“But you tell these villagers that you fought with her,” Myles said softly.
